DOT compliance means following all safety regulations set by the U.S. Department of Transportation and FMCSA. It ensures your company operates legally, avoids fines, and most importantly, keeps drivers and the public safe.
Carriers must maintain driver qualification files, hours-of-service logs, vehicle maintenance records, inspection reports, drug and alcohol testing records, and proof of insurance. These may be requested during audits.
Commercial vehicles must undergo a DOT annual inspection at least once every 12 months. In addition, drivers must perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, with written reports for defects.
A safety audit is a review conducted by FMCSA within the first 12 months of receiving your DOT number. It verifies that your company has the required safety management systems and records in place.
