Yes, if you operate as a for-hire carrier transporting goods or passengers across state lines. If you only operate within one state (intrastate) and haul exempt commodities, you may only need a DOT number.
You receive your DOT number immediately after applying online. MC numbers are also issued instantly, but they go through a vetting process and usually take about 21 business days to become active.
You’ll need your company information (business name, address, and structure), type of operation, insurance details, and the name of your process agent (BOC-3 filing). Proof of insurance is mandatory before your MC authority becomes active.
